Sarandë is one of my favourite places to explore in Albania. I like it because you can combine a beach holiday with good food, boat trips, viewpoints and some really interesting day trips. It is busy in summer, but I think that is part of the experience. Rather than staying in one spot, I prefer using Sarandë as a base and exploring the coastline and nearby towns.

🏖️ BEACHES

Beaches Around Sarandë

I found the beaches around Sarandë quite varied. Some are organised beach clubs, while others are much simpler public spots. I would choose differently depending on whether I wanted comfort, quiet or easy access to the water.

Mucobega Beach

Mucobega is more of a beach-club experience, so I would expect paid loungers in the organised area. There is also a smaller public section where I can bring my own towel.

Praia Alvaro e Natalia

This is a more basic public beach outside the centre. I like recommending places like this because they give me a different side of Sarandë than the main waterfront.

☀️ Come prepared: Public beaches can have little or no natural shade. In summer I would bring plenty of water, sunscreen and an umbrella if possible.

My experience: Walking to the beaches turned into a little expedition, but I enjoyed having a destination to reach rather than spending the whole day in the centre. If you enjoy walking, it can be part of the experience.

🍽️ FOOD

What I Like About Albanian Food

Food is one of the things I really enjoy about travelling through Albania. I find Albanian cooking has some similarities to Greek and wider Mediterranean food, but there are plenty of traditional Albanian dishes that have their own identity.

When I eat in Albania, I like looking beyond the familiar Mediterranean dishes and trying something that is specifically Albanian. That is one of the things that makes travelling through the country more interesting for me. You can have grilled meat, fresh vegetables and simple Mediterranean-style dishes, but you can also find traditional recipes that are much more connected to Albanian home cooking. You can find cheap giros for 350 lek or 400. They are everywhere in alabania .

Because Sarandë sits directly on the coast, seafood is a must for me. Fresh fish, grilled squid, octopus, mussels and other seafood dishes are easy to find. I especially like the idea of having seafood close to the water rather than treating it as just another meal during the day.

Albanian dishes I would try

Byrek is a flaky baked pastry that can be filled with cheese, vegetables or meat. It is an easy choice for breakfast or a quick meal.

Tavë kosi is a traditional Albanian baked dish made with lamb and a creamy yogurt-and-egg mixture. It is richer and more filling than the lighter coastal meals, so I would order it when I want something more traditional.

Fërgesë is another Albanian dish worth looking for. It is commonly made with peppers, tomatoes and cheese and has the kind of comforting flavour I associate with home-style cooking.

Taziki is also a hit in albania . I love it so much and alsways comes with fresh bread.

My biggest recommendation for Sarandë is simple: try the seafood. The coast is one of the reasons I would choose Sarandë in the first place, so I would take advantage of it.

Eating on a budget

I would not rely on one fixed price when budgeting for food in Sarandë. Restaurant prices change by season, location, portion size and the type of seafood. A casual meal can be very different from a large seafood dinner, especially in the busiest part of summer. To be fair sometimes its even cheaper to go get a Giros then going to the grocrey store and cooking.

My approach is to walk around, read a few menus and compare them before sitting down. That gives me a much better idea of what I am actually going to spend than choosing the first restaurant I see. Also reviews are very important i always look up the reviews of a place before sitting down and eating.

Julia Rooftop Lounge & Restaurant

I like this type of restaurant when I want the meal to be part of the experience. The rooftop setting gives me a chance to enjoy the view while eating, especially later in the day.

I would put this on my list when I want to focus more on traditional Albanian flavours rather than simply choosing a restaurant because it has a sea view.

📍 THINGS TO SEE

Sightseeing Around Sarandë

I would not spend my entire Sarandë trip sitting on the beach. There are several places nearby that give the trip much more variety.

01 — CASTLE

Lëkurësi Castle

If I want one viewpoint that immediately shows me why Sarandë is special, I would go to Lëkurësi Castle. The castle sits above the city, giving me a wide view over Sarandë, the Ionian Sea and the coastline toward Corfu.

The castle itself dates to the Ottoman period and was built in the 16th century. Today, I see it less as a huge historical complex and more as a place where the history, landscape and view come together.

I can reach it by car or taxi, and walking is another option if I want the uphill journey to be part of the outing. I would check the current access and parking situation before going because conditions can change during the busy season.

Sunset is the obvious time to visit, but it is also when I would expect the biggest crowds and the most traffic. If I mainly wanted the view and photographs, I would consider going earlier instead.

There is also a restaurant at the site, so I can combine the visit with a meal rather than treating the castle as a very short stop.

My tip: If I am driving, I would think about the return journey before sunset. Leaving immediately with everyone else can mean heavier traffic on the road down.

02 — NATURAL WONDER

Blue Eye

The Blue Eye, is one of the most unusual natural attractions I can visit from Sarandë. The spring is famous for its intense blue colour and incredibly clear water, surrounded by green forest.

The water is very cold and the area has rules intended to protect the spring. I would follow the current signs and local instructions rather than treating it like an ordinary swimming hole because you cannot swim there.

From Sarandë, the drive is roughly a short day-trip journey. I would check current bus schedules if I am travelling without a car because routes and seasonal schedules can change.

From the parking area, there is a walk toward the spring. I would bring water and comfortable shoes, especially during the hottest months.

My tip: The Blue Eye is beautiful, but I would go early or later in the day. That makes the walk more comfortable and can help me avoid the strongest summer heat and busiest period.

🚗 DAY TRIPS

My Favourite Day Trips From Sarandë

One of the reasons I like Sarandë as a base is that I can combine a coastal stay with completely different landscapes and historical sites.

Gjirokastër

Gjirokastër is one of the day trips I would choose if I wanted a change from the coast. The historic town is built into the hills and is known for its stone houses, old bazaar and castle. I love the contrast between spending one day beside the Ionian Sea and the next walking through an old mountain town.

Butrint

Butrint is the day trip I would choose when I want history. The archaeological site contains remains from different periods, including Greek and Roman history, and the surrounding landscape makes the visit feel very different from a museum.

I would combine Butrint with the southern coastline, especially if I am already planning to visit Ksamil.

Ksamil

Ksamil is famous for bright turquoise water and small beaches. I would visit if I want a more classic beach day, but I would also keep in mind that summer can be very busy. The photographs online often make the area look much quieter than it feels at peak times.

How I would plan it: I would not try to squeeze all three trips into one day. Gjirokastër, Butrint and Ksamil each deserve enough time to actually enjoy the place.

🎉 NIGHTLIFE

Nightlife in Sarandë

Sarandë has plenty of places to go out in summer. I personally prefer places where there is actually a dance floor and people are there to dance rather than somewhere that is mainly focused on sitting and drinking.

Rock & Blues Saranda

This is the nightlife spot I enjoyed most because it actually had the atmosphere I was looking for when I wanted to dance. If I want a more energetic night, this would be one of the first places I would consider.

I have not personally visited Orange Club, so I would rather not pretend to give it a first-hand review. If it interests me, I would check the current reviews, event schedule and recent photos before deciding where to go.

🚤 BOAT TOURS

Boat Tours in Sarandë

Getting onto the water is one of the experiences I would make room for during a Sarandë trip. The coastline looks completely different from the sea, and it is a great way to spend part of a summer day.

I find boat trips especially worthwhile when I want to see the Albanian Riviera from another perspective. From the water, I can see rocky sections of coastline, small bays and clear blue-green water that are difficult to appreciate from the road.

There are different types of trips, from shorter daytime excursions to longer trips and sunset experiences. I would compare the route, length of the trip, stops for swimming and what is included before paying.

I also would not assume that the price I see online is the current price. Boat-tour prices can change with the season, the route and the operator. If I am already in Sarandë, I can walk along the promenade and compare the current options in person.

Morning Boat Tours

A morning trip is the option I would choose if I want to spend the rest of the day exploring or relaxing on the beach. Starting earlier can also make the heat easier to handle.

Sunset Boat Tours

A sunset trip is a completely different experience. I would choose this if I care more about the atmosphere and views than having a full day on the water.

💡 My tip: I would compare several boats before booking. Look at the route, number of stops, duration and what is included rather than choosing only by price.

🧳 PRACTICAL TIPS

Things I Would Know Before Visiting Sarandë

A few simple things can make a summer trip much easier.

Summer Heat

Sarandë can become very hot in the middle of summer. I plan my longer walks and sightseeing for the morning or later afternoon whenever possible and carry water with me.

Bring Comfortable Shoes

I would pack proper walking shoes or comfortable sandals. Some beaches, viewpoints and natural attractions have uneven or rocky ground.

Mobile Data

I like having mobile data when travelling because I use maps, transportation information, restaurant locations and booking websites throughout the day. I would compare a local SIM/eSIM with my home provider before travelling.I tend to always buy my e sim online simply because I dont have to go in store and when I arrive in a country it is already activated . one i use alot is global e sim they tend to usally have great deals .

Cash & Cards

I would carry some Albanian lek with me even when I plan to use a card. Smaller cafés, beach businesses and other independent places may have different payment options.

❤️ MY TAKE

Would I Go Back to Sarandë?

Sarandë is not the place I would choose if I wanted a tiny, quiet historic town where everything closes early. It is lively, especially during summer, and the main areas can feel very busy.

But that is also what makes it fun for me. I can spend the morning in the water, have fresh seafood for lunch, explore a castle in the afternoon, take a boat trip another day and use the city as a starting point for Gjirokastër, Butrint, Ksamil and the rest of the Riviera.

What I like most is the variety. Sarandë gives me the coast, food, history, nightlife and easy day trips without having to move hotels every day.

If I were planning my trip again, I would use Sarandë as a base and give myself enough time to explore beyond the city centre. That is where I think the area becomes much more interesting.
