Durrës

My guide to beaches, restaurants, sightseeing, nightlife, outdoor activities and taking the ferry from Albania to Italy.

Discover Durrës

Durrës is a coastal city not far from Tirana and one of Albania's main port cities. While it wasn't my favorite destination in Albania, I was actually surprised by the waterfront, promenade and beautiful sunsets. There are beaches, restaurants, beach bars, nightlife and outdoor activities to explore.

For backpackers travelling around Albania, Durrës is worth considering as part of the bigger trip. It's close to Tirana, affordable, and makes a convenient stop before continuing further down the Albanian coast.

What I also found interesting about Durrës is how different sides of the city come together. You can spend part of the day on the beach, walk along the Adriatic waterfront, explore Roman and Byzantine history, eat seafood and then finish the evening at a seaside bar. That mix is what makes Durrës worth exploring beyond simply using it as a ferry port.

⛴️ FERRY TO ITALY

Taking the Ferry from Durrës to Italy

One of the biggest reasons you may find yourself in Durrës is because this is where you can catch the ferry from Albania to Italy. If you're travelling around Europe or backpacking through Albania, it's a very convenient connection.

Durrës is particularly useful if you're travelling between Albania and southern Italy. For me, the ferry made Durrës more than just another stop on the Albanian coast because it gave me an easy way to continue my trip across the Adriatic.

💡 Good to know: Ferry schedules, prices and travel times can change depending on the season and operator. Check your ticket and the current departure information before travelling.
🏖️ BEACHES

Beaches Around Durrës

Durrës has a long stretch of coastline, with beaches extending beyond the city itself. The waterfront is easy to reach and there are also beach areas further south toward Golem and Mali i Robit.

The main Durrës beach area is lively and developed, while the beaches farther south can feel a little quieter and more natural. If you have time, I think it's worth seeing more than one part of the coastline rather than staying in the same spot all day.

Golem Beach near Durrës

Durrës Beach

Durrës Beach is the main beach area near the city and is an easy option if you want to combine a beach day with the promenade, restaurants and cafés.

The beach has soft sand and relatively shallow water, which makes it particularly convenient for families and anyone who simply wants an easy day beside the sea.

  • Easy access from the city
  • Long sandy coastline
  • Soft sand and shallow water
  • Restaurants, cafés and beach bars nearby
  • Convenient if you're staying in central Durrës

Golem Beach

If you want to explore further down the coast, the Golem area offers a longer stretch of beach with hotels, restaurants and beach resorts.

I would consider Golem if you prefer a more traditional beach-resort atmosphere. There are plenty of places to stay and eat, so you don't necessarily have to return to central Durrës after spending the day here.

  • Further south from central Durrës
  • Lots of hotels and beach resorts
  • Restaurants and beach bars
  • Longer stretches of coastline
  • More of a beach-resort atmosphere

Mali i Robit

Mali i Robit is another coastal area south of Durrës. Compared with the main city beach, this area can feel a little quieter and more natural.

It's worth considering if you want to explore beyond the busiest parts of the Durrës coastline and see a different side of the area.

Which Beach Should You Choose?

If convenience is your priority, I would stay around Durrës Beach. If you're more interested in spending most of your time at the beach and want a resort atmosphere, Golem is worth looking at.

Personally, I would explore the coastline instead of assuming that the first beach you see is the only option.

🌅 My tip: Don't leave the waterfront before sunset. I was honestly surprised by how beautiful the sunsets were in Durrës.
🌅 WATERFRONT

Durrës Promenade & Vollga

One of the parts of Durrës that surprised me the most was the waterfront. The promenade is lined with cafés, restaurants, beach bars and places to enjoy the view over the Adriatic Sea.

The Vollga area is especially nice for an evening walk. You'll see palm trees, cafés, restaurants and people enjoying the seaside. It has a different atmosphere once the sun starts going down.

Sfinksi Seaside Viewing Platform

The Sfinksi viewing platform is a nice place to stop along the waterfront. It offers views over the Adriatic and is particularly beautiful around sunset.

Vollga Promenade

Vollga is a scenic seaside walkway where you can walk past cafés, restaurants, palm trees and street vendors. It is particularly enjoyable in the evening.

I liked this part of Durrës because you can make it very simple: walk beside the sea, stop for an ice cream or coffee, have dinner and then watch the sunset.

My experience: I honestly didn't expect to like the waterfront as much as I did. The promenade, Vollga area and sunsets were one of the things that surprised me most about Durrës.
🍽️ FOOD

Eating in Durrës

There are lots of restaurants along the waterfront and beach areas, making Durrës an easy place to enjoy a meal with a view. You'll find everything from casual beach restaurants to nicer seaside lounges.

Because Durrës is on the Adriatic, seafood is one of the foods I would look for while visiting. But I also recommend trying some traditional Albanian dishes rather than eating only international food.

OMA Dyrrhachium Restaurant & Beach Lounge

A beachfront restaurant and lounge right beside the water. It's a good option if you want to combine food with the seaside atmosphere and sunset views.

Aqua Lounge Bar & Restaurant

Another beachfront option where you can sit outside, relax and enjoy the view over the water. The beachfront patio is a nice place to watch the sunset.

Tavë Dheu

Tavë Dheu is a traditional Albanian dish made with meat, spices and cheese, usually served in a clay dish. If you're trying Albanian food for the first time, this is one dish I would look for.

Fërgesë

Fërgesë is a creamy Albanian dish commonly prepared with peppers, tomatoes and cottage-style cheese. It is very different from the seafood you will find along the coast and gives you another taste of traditional Albanian cooking.

Fresh Adriatic Seafood

Durrës is a natural place to look for fresh seafood. Octopus, mussels and grilled fish are all options you may see on menus around the waterfront.

Raki

Raki is a traditional Albanian spirit. It is strong, so if you're trying it for the first time, take it slowly.

🍴 My tip: The waterfront is the easiest area to explore if you want to combine dinner, drinks and a sunset walk without having to travel around the city.
📍 THINGS TO SEE

What to See in Durrës

Durrës is mainly known as a coastal and port city, but there is much more history here than I initially expected. The city has Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman influences, so you can easily add some history to a beach trip.

Fatih Mosque

The Fatih Mosque is an important historic religious landmark in Durrës. It was built in the 16th century and has survived periods of war and earthquakes.

Even if you are mainly visiting Durrës for the beach, I think it is worth taking a little time to notice the city's religious and architectural history.

Great Mosque of Durrës

The Great Mosque is another important Islamic landmark in the city and adds another layer to Durrës' diverse history and architecture.

These historic religious buildings are easy to combine with a walk through the city centre.

🏙️ LOCAL LIFE

Durrës City Centre & Local Markets

One of my favorite ways to understand a city is to spend some time away from the main tourist areas. In Durrës, the city centre and local markets give you a different atmosphere from the beach promenade.

City Centre

Walking through the centre lets you see everyday Durrës alongside the historical landmarks. You can combine a city walk with cafés, shops and the older parts of town before heading back toward the sea.

Bazar i Ri & Local Markets

Local markets are a good place to see a more everyday side of Albanian life. Depending on the market and season, you can find fresh produce, Albanian cheese, olives, honey and locally made products.

Fresh Produce

If you're staying in an apartment or travelling on a budget, local food markets can also be useful for buying fresh fruit, vegetables and other ingredients.

Albanian Products & Souvenirs

Markets can also be interesting if you want something different from the standard souvenir shops. Look for local products such as honey, olives and Albanian cheeses.

🛍️ My tip: Don't spend your entire Durrës visit on the beachfront. Walking through the centre and visiting local markets gives you a much better feeling for the city itself.
🚤 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Outdoor Activities in Durrës

If you're looking for something more active, Durrës can also be a gateway to different outdoor activities along the coast.

Jet Skiing

During the warmer months, you can find opportunities for jet skiing along the coast.

Paddleboarding

Paddleboarding is another option if you want to get out on the water and enjoy the coastline from a different perspective.

Snorkeling

There are also opportunities for snorkeling and exploring the water around the coast.

Hiking & Panoramic Views

There are areas around Durrës where you can walk or hike and find panoramic views over the Adriatic Sea.

🚤 BOAT TOURS

Boat Tours Around Durrës

If you'd rather explore the coastline from the water, there are also boat tours available. This can be a nice way to see more of the coastline without spending the whole day on the beach.

Coastal Boat Trips

Boat trips are an option if you want to get out on the Adriatic and explore the coastline from the water.

Explore the Coast

Depending on the tour, you may be able to visit different parts of the coast, enjoy the water and take in panoramic views from the sea.

💡 My tip: If you are interested in a boat tour, check the options available locally rather than assuming there is only one type of experience.
🎉 NIGHTLIFE

Bars & Nightlife in Durrës

Durrës has more nightlife than I expected. Along the waterfront you'll find beach bars, restaurants and several nightclubs directly beside the ocean.

Seaside Nightlife

Several nightlife spots are located directly along the waterfront, which makes the atmosphere especially nice in the evening.

Beach Bars

There are also plenty of beach bars where you can have a drink, listen to music and enjoy the sea before heading out later in the evening.

🌊 My experience: We went to one of the seaside clubs and I actually really enjoyed it. The atmosphere was good and being right beside the ocean made it feel different from a typical nightclub.
📍 GETTING THERE

How to Get to Durrës

Durrës is one of the easiest coastal cities to combine with a visit to Tirana. It is only around 35 km from Tirana, which makes it a practical option for a day trip or a longer stay by the Adriatic.

From Tirana

Durrës is roughly 35 km from Tirana and the journey can take around 30–40 minutes by car depending on traffic and conditions.

By Bus

Buses connect Tirana and Durrës regularly. This can be a practical option if you're travelling without a rental car.

From Tirana Airport

Durrës can also be incorporated into an itinerary directly from Tirana International Airport. If you're landing in Albania and heading toward the coast, it can be a convenient first or final stop.

By Ferry

If you're arriving from Italy, the ferry port puts Durrës directly into your Albania itinerary. This was particularly useful for me when travelling between Albania and Italy.

🚌 My tip: If you're backpacking Albania without a car, Durrës is one of the coastal destinations that can fit relatively easily into an itinerary starting or ending in Tirana.
🎒 BACKPACKER GUIDE

Is Durrës Worth Visiting?

Durrës isn't my favorite place in Albania, but I still think it's worth including if your goal is to experience as much of the country as possible.

I wouldn't describe Durrës as the place I would choose first if I only had a few days in Albania. But that's different from saying it isn't worth visiting. The city has a long coastline, historical sights, restaurants, nightlife and an important connection to Italy.

Close to Tirana

Durrës is relatively close to Tirana and can be easily incorporated into a larger Albania itinerary.

Affordable

Durrës can be an affordable destination, with hostels, hotels and more luxurious accommodation available.

Beaches & Waterfront

The long coastline gives you plenty of opportunities to combine sightseeing with time beside the Adriatic Sea.

History

The Roman Amphitheater, Archaeological Museum, Byzantine Walls and other historic landmarks make Durrës more interesting than a simple beach destination.

Easy Coast Connection

If you're backpacking south along the Albanian coast, Durrës can be a convenient stop before continuing toward other coastal destinations.

Easy Ferry Connection

If you're travelling onward to Italy, Durrës is especially convenient because of its ferry connection.

🎒 My honest opinion: When I backpacked through Albania, I wanted to see the whole country and experience as much as possible. For that reason, I think Durrës is worth stopping in.

But if you're short on time and looking for my favorite Albanian destinations, there are other places I'd personally choose first.

What I would not do is judge Durrës only by its beach. The combination of the Roman history, city centre, markets, waterfront, food and ferry connection gives you several different reasons to spend time here.
